> “We’ve seen time and again how Beijing weaponises its tech dominance for surveillance, control and coercion, both domestically and abroad.”
I don't see how a Chinese company is necessarily more of a threat here. The US companies have a long track record of surveillance, control (manipulation through social media), and coersion (at least to the point of doxxing, disabling accounts, etc.).
They also have a long track record and a culture they proudly claim of crossing any legal, regulatory, societal, and moral boundary for profit and power. They are also mostly outspoken supporters of the US government, which is openly embracing "control and coercion, both domestically and abroad", and I expect they would agree with that depiction.
Arguably, if you live in the US, the Chinese company is less likely to be interested in you personally than the US companies and their political allies.
(Don't put sensitive information in any system of any kind that you don't trust.)
