So I’ve been thinking more about this idea of an algorithmically free content consumption platform.
Consider this,
Today, big tech companies are too fixated on algorithmically driven [everything]. Which has its limits.
For instance, I remember way back in the good old days there was this AI themed YouTube channel based on crappy TTS synthesis which kinda worked, but then YouTube cracked down on TTS (at least the blatantly obvious ones), forcing this channel to move to a more realistic voice that kinda killed the whole theme of the channel.
I suspect this would have demonetized or completely de-platformed Stephen hawking as well in some alternate universe where he became a YouTuber.
While on the opposite side of the spectrum, one can make an argument that online platforms are failing to filter out undesirable, low quality and low effort content, among other things.
In a way it’s like an arms race, and at a fundamental level, with regard to algorithmically driven content recommendation and moderation in general, I suspect there’s no ideal solution that can uniformly apply to all cases in the same way that there’s no general algorithm that can determine if a given Turing complete program will terminate or not.
So big tech platforms are trying to solve a problem that’s essentially unsolvable. Akin to trying to use a calculus based toolkit on a noncontinuous and purely discrete system, by analogy, we instead need to turn to derivative free heuristics, an approach that is completely foreign to the mindset of dumb data scientists everywhere.
So as a fun thought experiment, I’m curious, for those of you out there who are both super smart and creative: how would you design a business model for an algorithmically free content consumption platform?
As they say,

“a successful system is one that is capable of producing the conditions that allow it to maintain and improve itself.”

Or if I’m just completely outta touch, you’re welcome to roast me in the comments since I have thick skin. If I see the light, then great.
Also AFAIK there's no DM on here but since I'm looking for new friends you can reach me at: hello@colbyn.com
