If you are not on-call, then don&#x27;t answer such messages. If you do not enforce your own boundaries, nobody else is going to do it for you.<p>Anyway, the best on-call setup I had was when I worked at a hospital. Over the years, the doctors had driven how on-call works. If we got called, we got a minimum of 2 hours pay. If we concluded that problem, and got called again within the 2 hour window, we got <i>another</i> 2 hour minimum pay. We loved quick and easy calls. Being on call was either quiet or lucrative, depending on how the night&#x2F;weekend went.

If the techies were paid for responding to off-hours requests, and the requestors were billed, only urgent requests would be made. There are times when tech problems can cost a company a lot of money and need to be fixed ASAP.
