Gotta wash your salad!
I know when traveling, a lot of people recommend using a produce washing agent. I was curious to look this up to see what they're doing.
EcoLab has their safety data sheet published here[0].
You mix it with water and it contains:
- Lactic Acid (reduces pH, likely killing some pathogens)
- Sodium hydrogensulfate (also reduces pH)
- Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, sodium salt (food safe surfactant to loosen microbes)
0: https://assets.pim.ecolab.com/media/Original/10085/US-Z8-913...

Am I misreading things or is increasingly the case that LETTUCE is deadlier then undercooked meat?
Is there a radiation treatment or similar for lettuce? Can it simply be washed thoroughly?
I don't even like it.

Wow, this case sounds like something straight from House.
> The worms migrate through the blood or along peripheral nerves
How does a worm move along peripheral nerves, physically? Now that I think about it, I don't know exactly what a nerve is like. Is it hollow? Is it filled with fluid like blood vessels?

Most rat lung cases in Hawaii are on the Big Island. Not sure why this is but worth noting if you are traveling. Beware of raw produce at farmers markets and from small organic grocery stores.

When eating out, especially when abroad, follow a simple rule: eat only what is fully cooked and is very hot. Don't eat anything that isn't cooked. This rules out sushi and salad both. Also don't eat snails, slugs, frogs, or other weird things that could have been insufficiently cooked. If you want to be thorough, carry an IR thermometer and a meat thermometer so you can test it.

Ugh. Rat lungworm. When I think of parasites, I always think of this story from a few years back: https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/05/health/man-dies-after-eat...

Eat cooked meat and vegetables, drink boiled water, and avoid contact with wild water sources and wild animals.
May parasites stay away from you.
