It comes down to incentives. If your chances of being promoted are slim, why do any more than is needed to avoid being fired.<p>With group based bonuses (eg options), your individual contribution makes little difference.<p>Incentives just aren&#x27;t aligned well.

&gt;a recent study of more than 1,100 U.S. employees from MyPerfectResume, a CV platform<p>That seems like a less than ideal sample location, just one site of people who presumably have some interest in leaving &#x2F; left &#x2F; lost their job?<p>Something I often wonder:<p>&gt;That means reassessing their current pay structures to ensure they align with market rates for talent, she says.<p>What if they are, and people still don&#x27;t like it?<p>There are other suggestions in there and I&#x27;m not dismissing those, but what if the market rate really isn&#x27;t great? People&#x27;s engagement &#x2F;= market rate, they might not even be related at all.
