If COBOL is so problematic, why does the US government still use it?

On the contrary, COBOL is amazing. It's one of the first computer languages that can still compile programs written 40 years ago, while Python scripts 10 years old need extensive rewriting!

It looks like in year 5000 there would still be some remnants of COBOL buried deep in the tech stack.
