I really respect the fact that Valve has not continued with several of their titles simply because they could not find the fun in them - new mechanics in Portal, Left 4 Dead or Half Life never really scratched the itch and thus were just simply not made.<p>When a fun new mechanic was found - VR - they created a game not because it was new, not because it was the trend, but because they found the fun there. Many publishers and developers could learn a thing or two from Valve.<p>(No, I'm not going to mention Artifact)
