As China sweeps top spots, chemistry seems to be dying in the US

D'oh, yeah.
What right-thinking, well-to-do American would want anything that's labeled "chemical" to be located anywhere near where they live and work?
Or, what right-thinking young college student would want to take on the grueling (and at-times dangerous) task of getting an advanced degree in chemistry? The status, pay, and working conditions are all far below what AI, consulting, finance, law, and software promise. And they'd be personally tied to an industry with a seriously checkered reputation.
Plus, as Team NIMBY and Team Wall Street work together, to ship all of America's basic industries and supply chains off to distant (and often not-so-friendly) countries - how long could any American kid expect a career in chemistry to last, anyway?
