> Apple was penalized for restricting app developers from informing users about alternative payment options outside the App Store.
Sounds reasonable.
> Meta's fine stems from its "consent or pay" model implemented in November 2023, which forced European users to either consent to personal data combination for targeted advertising or pay a monthly subscription for an ad-free experience on Facebook and Instagram.
Not sure I understand this one. Is "data combination" the link between services, e.g. that Meta can combine data between WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook?
I was asked in 2023 by e.g. Google if I wanted to keep the services linked or unlink them, which sounds reasonable. I understand how it doesn't make Google/Meta happy, but as a user I think it should be my choice to do that. Probably those services (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp for Meta or Gmail, Chrome, Android, Google for Alphabet) should just not all belong to the same company anyway.
