My sister and her family used to own a powerboat. I was sort of excited when they took me out a couple of times on it. I was really confused about the lifejacket procedures, and everybody else in the boat just kind of picked theirs up and tossed it to the side, as if "yeah if I fall overboard someone will throw it to me and I'll magically don it while flailing about."<p>I knew that this would not be a possibility for me (or anyone else, for that matter) and I did not try to stand my ground against their beloved customs, but it made me rather sullen during the entire trip that I felt I had taken unnecessary risks, just so I wouldn't be "That Guy".<p>Nobody fell out of our boat, but our captain did lose his baseball cap once or twice, and it was sort of hilarious how he flung the boat around and a couple of other boaters would converge to retrieve the cap and return it to him out on the water. Now I suppose any "man overboard" situation would've been treated with similar gravity. It was also a nice warm California summertime in the San Diego Bay. But I am thankful that we didn't have any occasion to test our rescue procedures.
