I am getting fed up with Rust-this and Rust-that BS.
Question is... Why? sudo is already HEAVILY mature and tested program. Why are they replacing all these program with Rust?
Point is.. Rust is a great selling point. It is "Memory Safe" and that is a good selling point to use as to why Ubuntu are doing this.
Behind the smoke and mirrors HAS to be other reasons! It is likely to bring in younger developers who (likely) care less about politics. The older generation programmers likely throw difficulties to certain cultural changes. With the younger ones, you can mould them from the get go.. what better way that to intice them in with RUSt.. rUSt.. It's RuSTTT!!!
I could also think the MAIN reason Ubuntu are doing this, alongside of other programs they are replacing (ie corutil).. is to ditch GNU.. or specifically the GPL license.
What is the end game? Ubuntu taking the source code of these coretutils, added extra features.. and using them for a fee... a "better, paid version of the Ubuntu distro" ??
People can p00p on people like Richard Stallman all they want.. but I am concerned about the future of Free Software.. even the future of Linux kernel and other great software. Once the old gen of Richard and Linus pass, I worry that the next generation just do not care.
