Web Engineering Manager
Job Description
You're a seasoned engineering manager -- expertly adept at managing people and projects alike. You've heard the stories (and perhaps have first hand experience) of useless layers of management at the big software houses. But you also know that solid management can make an enormous difference in the day to day productivity of both individual engineers and engineering groups as a whole.
You've thought about working for a startup, but haven't yet found a small software company that understands that "no managers -- ever" is just as much of a mistake as bloating a company with useless layers of management. In short, you want to find a startup that values strong engineering management skills as something very distinct, but just as important as raw coding ability.
Responsibilities
We're looking for an engineering manager who will take charge of our Web Engineering group. You will be responsible for: building a great team of engineers, and leading them to make sure they can do their best work working with the other engineering groups, sales & marketing, and the founders to make sure that the efforts of your group remain aligned with the objectives of the company debugging the engineering process when things don't go according to plan, and implementing fixes where necessary
Requirements
You've worked for 3+ years as a project manager. You've experimented with different software development methodologies, and have an opinion on what works and what doesn't. You know there is a careful balance between up front thinking and shipping stuff and seeing what happens. You've had direct reports. You know how to hire and retain great engineers. You know how to deliver both praise and constructive criticism to your people. You've seen many kinds of "people problems", and know the importance of catching them early.
Although you might not code everyday, you are still familiar with your CS fundamentals and emerging technologies. You are not hesitant to fire up an editor and write some Rails or Javascript when inspiration hits.
You are genuinely excited by the prospect that 1 hour of carefully applied effort on your part can save 10+ hours of our engineers time. While you might not write much code yourself, you are delighted knowing that your work helps those who do write even more of it faster.
Interested? Apply with your resume and a brief cover letter to jobs@pagerduty.com Thank you!
