BackerKit is a software platform that offers creators with successful crowdfunding projects the logistical power tools they need to focus on making, not managing, so that they can see their creations come to life!
Creators come to us after running funding campaigns on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Tilt, or their own websites—and we’re eager to make their lives (and their backers’ lives) easier as the crowdfunding economy grows and prospers. We are building something that has never existed before; the backbone of the crowdfunded economy.
We’re trusted by comic book artists, tabletop gamers, filmmakers, spatula designers, guitar makers, fashion designers, 3D printing engineers, and hundreds of other creative entrepreneurs. Basically, we have the coolest customers a startup can have :)
About Us:
- BackerKit is a group of 7 creators (artists / designers / writers /makers / hackers / developers) who are excited about helping other creators in the crowdfunding space, and are looking for someone who understands what it’s like to be one to join our team.
- Both founders (a developer and a designer) have worked on the Kickstarter campaign Diaspora (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mbs348/diaspora-the-personally-controlled-do-it-all-distr), which is now a fully community-runned effort and part of the ‘Free Software Support Network’, a project by Eben Moglen. They have also worked on the meme-generating project, Makr.io. Both who have contributed significantly to open source projects
- We’ve worked with hundreds of awesome crowdfunding projects, big and small, from campaigns like Wondermark’s Jigsaw Puzzles of Fictional Victorian Charts (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/malki/wondermarks-jigsaw-puzzles-of-fictional-victorian) to Reading Rainbow (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/readingrainbow/bring-reading-rainbow-back-for-every-child-everywh)
- We value transparency, the willingness to try a bunch of things and learn from them, and be challenged by different ideas
- We believe crowdfunding is a new way for creators to bring their projects to life, or even help jumpstart their dream of starting their own business
- BackerKit is a profitable company, and have received funding from YC and SVAngel
You:
- You have spent time working on a fairly large Rails app
- You understand and has empathy for the culture of creators and backers in the crowdfunding space and bottom-up economy
- You have rare people skills which allow you to get out in front of problems and proactively help customers with potential troubles
- You love working one-on-one with customers in helping them succeed
- You are hungry to learn and move fast, and can buckle down to get things done
- You are passionate, creative, have other interests, and work on other projects
- You are also great at communicating clearly to team members often about ideas, issues, or improvements
- You are conscious of your current level of productivity and happiness, and make continual changes to grow
- You are excited to work with a small team
- You are someone who is a pleasure to work with and encourages the entire team to improve their craft
- You are not afraid to get your hands dirty and do some good old-fashioned schlepping
- You are entrepreneurial - we trust everyone on our team to make bold choices and do what is best to grow the company
Primary Responsibilities:
- Talking to customers via email and occasionally phone about improvements or issues they may be having
- Lead a small but growing team of developers
- Make important technical decisions that have sweeping consequences for our customers and the business
- Release early and often
- Product input. Everyone at BackerKit is customer-facing, and we expect everyone to get to know the project creators we are serving (plus, they are awesome, just like you)
If this sounds like a team you’d like to be a part of, please email maxwell@backerkit.com with your resume and/or Github.
Extra credit: Send us over a list of URLs to any Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Tilt, or other crowdfunded campaigns you’ve supported.
Look forward to helping creators together!
